Are You Using Your Heater Efficiently?

If outdoor temperatures didn’t clue you in, winter is officially here for the long haul. Are you prepared?

Sure, we don’t always have bone-chillingly cold weather at this time of the year, but our winter seasons are certainly cold, and require fully functioning heating systems to keep households as warm as possible.

When we say we want you to have a great heating system, we mean that we want you to have a heater that is reliable, effective, and highly efficient! This last point is especially important. After all, if your heater isn’t working as efficiently as it should, then it means you’re paying more for its service than you should! And let’s face it, our winters are too long and drawn out to pay too much to comfort.

So what can you do? We’ve provided a rundown of some relatively easy steps you can take. Read on!

Update Your Thermostat

While it may seem like a small and inconsequential component of your HVAC systems, the thermostat actually has a big job. Sure it may be relatively tiny, but it serves as the “brain” of your HVAC systems and the component through which you communicate with your heater and your air conditioner.

Upgrading to even the most basic digital thermostat—or even better a programmable or smart thermostat—will help you start enjoying more efficient comfort.

Utilize Weatherstripping to Keep Drafts Out

The heat from your furnace or heat pump system can escape out of cracks in the windows and doors of your home—meaning you’ll lose energy that you’re otherwise paying for. You might consider investing in some simple weatherstripping to help yourself seal your windows and doors, ensuring that the heat in your home stays in your home.

Use Your Ceiling Fans

This may seem like an odd tip to give you in the middle of winter—after all, aren’t fans used to cool? Well, yes but… even your furnace has a blower fan to distribute warm air!

Sure, when it’s summertime, you use your ceiling fans in combination with the AC system, and you probably noticed this helps you feel cooler. Feeling cooler allows you to adjust the thermostat accordingly so your air conditioner doesn’t have to run as long, therefore saving energy.

This same principle can be applied to your heating system! Simply by reversing the direction of the fan blades using a small switch up near the center of your fan, you can help heated air get distributed more effectively.

Just remember that when warmer weather comes back around, you want to flip that switch back to get your cooling comfort back.

Don’t Skip Heating Maintenance

You may have heard us say before that heating maintenance should be scheduled in the fall, before you need the system the most. This is true, however, it’s actually more important that you have it done every heating season, consistently. So if you skipped it this year, it’s not too late to schedule it now!
